Johnny O’Neal played the part of legendary pianist Art Tatum in the 2004 Academy Award Nominated film “Ray”. Director Taylor Hackford wanted a great pianist for this part, as his playing was to be included in the film. He knew that the only pianist to call upon was Johnny O’Neal. The reason? Johnny is today’s Art Tatum, the pianist with chops as prodigious as Tatum’s….

Johnny has toured extensively throughout the United States, Europe and South Africa as a headline artist, as well as five trips to Japan with Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers.

On his Carnegie Hall debut in 1985... Mr. O'Neal concentrated on richly harmonized, rhythmically propulsive renditions of standards. Mr. O'Neal's rendition of ''Love for Sale'' was characteristic of a methodical approach that made each song a confident musical arc, encompassing stride and boogie-woogie variations and peaking in agitated Errol Garnerish right-handed chord clusters.
