Leonard Pitts
Pitts has been writing professionally for 25 years and his work has appeared in such publications as Musician, Spin, Right On!, TV Guide, Reader's Digest and Parenting. In addition, he was the producer of "Who We Are," an award-winning radio documentary on the history of black America, and has written and produced numerous other radio programs on subjects as diverse as Madonna and Martin Luther King, Jr. Pitts was also a writer for radio's popular countdown program, "Casey's Top 40 with Casey Kasem." Pitts was a finalist for a Pulitzer Prize in 1992. In 1997, he was awarded the first place prize for commentary in division four (newspapers with a circulation of over 300,000) in the American Association of Sunday and Feature Editors' Ninth Annual Writing Awards competition. He has been honored by the Society of Professional Journalists, the National Association of Black Journalists and the Simon Wiesenthal Center, among others. He is a three-time recipient of the National Headliners Award and in 2001, was awarded first place for commentary in the prestigious competition sponsored by the American Society of Newspaper Editors. Pitts was born and raised in Southern California. Since 1995, he has lived near Washington, D. C., with his wife and five children.
