The Spelunkers were officially formed in the summer of 1995 in the basement of 1212 N. Evans in Bloomington, IL. Almost immediately the trio started playing shows in and around the Midwest. Tommy, John, and Clay had spent the better part of 5 years as the backbone to the Something Brothers, a seminal and much lauded band that sprang up from the fertile musical landscape of Bloomington/Normal in the late 80's. The So. Bros. called it quits in late 1992. The boys then spent a couple of years exploring other musical avenues: Tommy in California; John touring with the House of Large Sizes; and Clay doing guitar chores for the Funkayros. 1212 N. Evans became the vacuum that brought the boys together again in 1995. The Splelunkers recorded their debut album Breakfast is America with fellow ex So. Bros. Edwin Pierce producing. "Breakfast" was released in Sept. 1996 on Whitehouse Records, to rave reviews. The summer of 1997 found them back in the studio recording Demand Your Annual Rent.
