Great American Taxi formed in March 2005 at the request of a local Boulder promoter to be an allstar band for an environmental benefit show. After the first rehearsal, actually probably after the first song was played together, there was talk of future shows and plans. Some of these musicians had been playing together for ten years, and some had been wanting to play together for at least ten years.

Vince Herman of Leftover Salmon and Reed Foehl of the former front range tour de force Acoustic Junction had talked of collaborating on a project for quite a while. The benefit show was the vehicle for this to happen. With the aid of Chad Staehly, who had been playing keyboards with numerous musicians in various projects and formations in Colorado for the last few years was the man to help pull the rest of the band together.

Jake Coffin and Eben Grace had been on the road and recording with singer/songwriter Dan Bern for the last three and four years respectively until they had recently settled back down in the Boulder area where among other things they had been playing with Staehly in the John McKay Band. Jake Coffin is one of the area's best drummers as he is constantly bringing his energy into anything he touches. Eben Grace is a genius guitar player, but he also has an ace in his pocket, the pedal steel. Eben gives the band a real boost with his country textures and gritty leads.

Calls also immediately went to a couple of Single Malt Band members. Will Downes plays bass with just about everybody in the Boulder area, hosting bluegrass jams, and playing rock-n-roll in several bands. Jeff Hamer, multi- instrumentalist extraordinaire, was the final touch for the band. Jeff plays electric guitar, acoustic guitar, tenor banjo, mandolin, etc., and can sing and write a tune as well as anybody in the band.

Since the Taxi has started rolling down the road, Mr.Will Downes has taken sabbatical and Brian Schey has filled the position for bass duties. Brian has been a long time friend and band mate with Eben and Jake collaborating on various projects including Dan Bern Band and Fraga.

With Reed's soulful songwriting and Vince's incredible band leader qualities and musicianship, all supported by the rest of the cast, this band might be the next "big thing" to come out of Boulder. Since the benefit show the band has played a bunch of shows and looks forward to what the future holds. They have recorded a five song EP and hope to complete an album as soon as the chance presents itself. People are coming out of the woodwork to help support the ride!
