The members of America met on a US Air force base in England, where their parents were stationed. They first formed the trio in 1971. Playing acoustic music they decided to name the band after their homeland, America. The sound of America is often compared to Crosby, Stills, and Nash.

They landed a contract with Warner Bros. records in the UK, and released their first single Horse with no name which hit #3 in the UK charts. Due to the success of the single, Warner decided to release it in the US where it quickly claimed the top spot on the charts. Horse with no name was followed up with two consecutive top 10 hits in the US. I need you and Ventura Highway.

1972 seemed to be their year, they never again reached the success of their debut. They did however have a number 1 hit with Sister Golden Hair in 1975. A country rock love song. Five years after their debut Dan Peek left the band to pursue a solo career. America hit the U.S. top 10 once again in 1982 With the single You Can Do Magic off of their View From The Ground Album. America continues releasing albums, and touring in the 90's.

The legendary producer of the Beatles, George Martin, produced all AMERICA's albums from 1974 to 1979 (beginning with HOLIDAY and the last being SILENT LETTER).

AMERICA won a Grammy Award in 1972 for Best New Artist.
