Lane Kirkland served as president of the AFL-CIO, America's largest labor union, and is a leading commentator on politics, labor, and economics. As president of the AFL-CIO, he strengthened the organization's image and prominence in public life. He served on major presidential commissions, including the National Commission on Social Security Reform, the National Endowment for Democracy, and the National Economic Commission. He was also a director of the American Arbitration Association, the African American Labor Center, and the Free Trade Union Institute. Among his many awards is the Presidential Medal of Freedom. In his lectures, Kirkland comments on today's politics, economy, and labor force. He provides a unique perspective as one of the true giants of the 20th-century labor movement.
